FREE Phone Calls!

What is VOIP exactly?

If you have a reasonable quality Internet connection you can get phone service delivered through your Internet connection instead of from your local phone company.

VOIP is an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol, or in plain English it's a "phone service over the Internet".

Some people use VOIP in addition to their traditional phone service, since VOIP service providers usually offer lower rates than traditional phone companies, but sometimes doesn't offer emergency phone service (police, fire, ambulance), directory assistance, or other common phone services. While many VOIP providers offer these services, consistent industry-wide means of offering these are still developing.

How do I get FREE long distance calls?

The most common way to use VOIP for calling friends and relatives overseas is through third party applications normally used for live text messaging including Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, AOL Instant Messenger, Windows Live Messenger and Google Talk just to name a few. These programs have the facility for you to call anyone using the same program around the world for FREE as long as you both have headphones/speakers and a microphone.

The next step is a dedicated phone specially designed for these software platforms, for example the Phillips VOIP321 which is one of a number of available cordless phones that works with traditional phone lines and Skype at the same time, so you can send and recieve normal phone call on your existing line and also send and recieve VOIP calls from anyone around the world FREE of charge.

Cheap calls to landline & mobile phones.

Hundreds of specialist VOIP providers around the world can set you up with cheap calls to any landline phone in the world using a dedicated phone the plugs directly into your broadband internet connection (no computer required in most cases). Many of the chat programs mentioned above also have a facility to call landline phones in addition to other users of the same software.

My personal preference is Skype as they have excellent call quality (as good as any landline phone I have ever had!) and some great deals for sending and recieving phone calls from overseas.
Skype also gives you the ability to have a landline phone number in dozens of countries which then allows your friends and relatives to call you locally on a local number in their country, which then diverts through to your Skype phone FREE of charge regardless of where you are in the world at the time ... also it's hard to argue with more than 275 millions registered users (Feb 2009)
